What to Expect At Your Appointment

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted at the front desk and receive a medical questionnaire to fill out. Once you’ve completed it, our dental assistant will come to the reception area and escort you back to a room to see your dentist.

The examination is usually carried out first, followed by having X-rays taken depending on when you had them last. If you’re not sure or think that it was recent, we will send a request for reports to your previous dentist. After the X-rays are taken, we’ll move on to having a cleaning done if you wish to do so. That will be completed by the dentist or our dental hygienist.

At the end of your appointment, if there is more treatment necessary in the future, we will discuss the proper treatment plan with you. You can then proceed to the front desk and schedule out any future visits as needed. If you don’t require more treatment, you can go ahead and book in for your next checkup and clean.

The Frequency of Your Visits

On average, we recommend that you get a checkup and clean every six months. Our recommendations will be tailored to what is best for your individual level of oral health. You might be able to stretch it out as far as 12 months. Others need extra cleanings, which will be done every 3-4 months. If this is the case, however, you won’t require an examination every time. Instead, the examination will be done on every second cleaning visit.

What does a checkup and clean involve?

A checkup and clean is the term used to refer to your regular dental examinations and cleanings. At this appointment, each tooth will be examined, along with the gums and soft tissues of the mouth. A full cleaning is carried out that will leave your teeth smooth and shining. If we identify any other issues present that need to be addressed, we’ll discuss them with you and you can book out future appointments as needed.

When should my other treatments be scheduled?

We will let you know if we think that you need to address a problem right away or if it’s okay to wait for some time before returning for treatment. You can choose to book some together and get them done on the day or space them out according to your preferences.

What if I feel unsure about getting future treatment?

You’re never required to book in for treatment if you don’t want to get it done. We’ll explain your treatment options to you and then let you decide how you’d like to proceed.

I think I had X-rays taken in the last year or two but can’t remember. Do I need to have them taken again?

If this is your first visit with us, we can always check with your previous provider to see when your X-rays were last taken. If you have new concerns about your dental health or we find anything that could be a potential problem during your examination, it can still be a good idea to have X-rays done again. That way, we can be certain there is no deeper issue that would require more complex, costlier treatment in the future.
