Extractions
At Cannington Dental Centre, you’ll find a full range of services offered by our experienced team. In every procedure, we strive to be gentle, prioritising your comfort at every turn. When you have an extraction with us, we’ll make sure you’re comfortable, then proceed efficiently with the procedure.
Why You Might Need Teeth Extracted
There are many reasons that a tooth extraction might be necessary. These include
- A retained baby tooth that needs to come out
- Before starting orthodontic treatment
- A severely broken tooth
- Wisdom teeth
You may or may not have pain that relates to the tooth in question. If we determine that you have a damaged tooth that can’t be saved, we’ll remove it, then talk about options for tooth replacement.
We also perform wisdom teeth extractions in-house. Your wisdom teeth may not sit right in the mouth and are impacted or come through but don’t fit in your mouth properly. As a result, you may experience bite issues or rubbing on your teeth and gums.
There are three options when it comes to relieving your anxiety:
- Oral sedation
- IV sedation
- General anaesthetic
Oral sedation requires coordinating with your GP to discuss whether you’re a good candidate for oral sedation, which will make you feel calm. The next option is to arrange for an anaesthetist to come to our clinic and do intravenous sedation, also called twilight sedation. If your prefer to be fully unconscious during your treatment, general anaesthetic is an option for you. You’ll be in hospital with our oral surgeon who is licensed to work out of the hospital and have your treatment completed there.
Following a normal extraction, we typically suggest you take the rest of the day off work so you can rest easy and make sure you’re feeling okay and your healing is well underway. You can usually return to the next day and manage any discomfort with over-the-counter painkillers. If you have multiple teeth extracted or your wisdom teeth have been removed, a couple of days off work is best. We can arrange a medical certificate for you with the proper amount of time.
