Fillings

We can take care of all ages, offering the solutions you and your loved ones need to show off a healthy, beautiful smile for life. If you have a tooth that has been damaged, a restorative option such as a filling may be appropriate.

A filling is used to make repairs to a tooth that has decayed or broken from a form of trauma. It acts as a substance that fills the damaged area, restoring your smile.

What to Expect When Getting a Filling

At your appointment, you’ll come in to have your filling done and get anaesthetic applied. We have some patients who don’t want to have anaesthetic, so the choice is completely up to you. We will prepare your mouth for the filling by removing any cracks, area of decay or compromised tooth material. We’ll rebuild the area by applying a tooth-coloured material called composite resin. After it has been applied, we will check your bite and make sure your teeth meet comfortably before sending you home.

The length of your appointment will depend on the site of the filling and how many are being done. A single filling might take just a half-hour. If you’re having a few in a single session as many choose to do, it might take 60-75 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need a filling?

It’s difficult to know without visiting a dentist. Some signs that you may have decay include pain, sensitivity or an area of the tooth that looks worn down or dark. The best bet is to come in for a consultation. At that appointment, bring up your concerns to your dentist, who will give you a thorough examination. After this process, we can determine if a filling is the most appropriate option for you.

Are there alternatives to getting a filling?

There are other restorative solutions available at our clinic. For example, if you have a large area of decay or damage, it may be more suitable to get a dental crown placed on your tooth, which will make it more stable and functional.

Does it hurt to have a filling done?

We emphasise the importance of gentle dentistry, making sure you’re comfortable at all times. Anaesthetic is applied before beginning the process of giving you a filling, so you will experience minimal discomfort.

Do I need to have a follow-up after my initial appointment for a filling?

No second appointment is necessary after getting your filling. There are, however, some situations in which you may want to give us a call. If the anaesthetic wears off and your bite isn’t quite comfortable, contact us straightaway. It’s difficult to give proper feedback while you’re numb, so it’s normal to return for some slight adjustments.

What’s the best way to avoid needing to get a filling?

Having great oral health is within everyone’s reach. The key ingredients to avoiding the need for a filling are brushing, flossing and regular checkups. You should brush twice a day and floss daily, sticking to strict home hygiene routines. Your regular checkups should be undertaken every six months. If you have concerns such as gum disease, we may recommend more frequent checkups. We’ll make personalised recommendations to you after your initial examination.
