Custom Mouthguards

Woman putting in mouthguardContact sports like rugby, football, boxing and martial arts can put adults and children at an increased chance of dental injuries and concussions.

With a sports mouthguard, you can safely protect your teeth and gums from traumatic injuries, lowering the chances of

  • Lacerations to the lips, tongue and cheeks
  • Broken or chipped enamel
  • Knocked out teeth
  • Concussions
  • Jaw fractures
  • Facial fractures

What Are Custom Mouthguards?

A custom mouthguard is specially shaped to fit your bite precisely and uniquely. Unlike choosing a mouthguard from a store, which can me mouldable, we use a system that allows us to fit it to your bite so that no irritation occurs while maximising protection.

An over-the-counter mouthguard may be lower in price, however, it can do more harm than good if it isn’t properly fit to your teeth.

When you choose our practice for your mouthguard, you’ll also have the ability to customise it’s look, selecting the colour or colours you’d like. Children often love this because it can match their uniform!

Compared to stock guards sold over-the-counter in stores, a professional mouthpiece offers advantages like:

  • Protection against secondary trauma
  • Improved comfort
  • Easier to talk and hydrate with
  • Less likely to fall out
  • Better fit
  • Crafted from an exact mould of your teeth

Depending on who needs the mouthguard (an adult or a child) we will have it designed to fit the specific individual. Adults can usually wear their sports appliance for several seasons in a row. Children, on the other hand, can grow a significant amount between sports seasons. As such, they frequently need to have their mouthguards updated every year or so.

Caring for Your Sports Appliance

Just like an orthodontic tray, retainer or removable denture, you need to keep your sports guard clean. Between uses, store it in a dry container and keep it out of the heat. Avoid using hot water to clean it, as it could cause the material to warp. Instead, brush it with a nonabrasive toothpaste under lukewarm tap water, then dry it thoroughly. Be sure to clean it after every use, so that bacterial accumulation doesn’t occur.
